Ladies of Laird: Celebrating the Women Behind the Craft

Watch Laird Hatters Founder Zofia Torun-Shaw Interview for International Women's Day

Where would Laird Hatters be without the incredible, hard-working, and creative women in our world?

At Laird Hatters, craft and character are at the heart of everything we do. Much of that spirit is shaped by the talented women who drive our brand forward. From the workroom floor to the shopfront, from design and production to customer experience, women have played a central role in shaping the look, feel and future of Laird.

This International Women’s Day, we’re shining a light on the Ladies of Laird — the women whose creativity, leadership, and skill have helped make our hats more than accessories, but expressions of individuality, heritage and confidence.

Zofia — Founder and Creative Visionary

Laird Hatters began with the vision of Zofia, who founded the company in 2009 with a mission to revive traditional British hat-making for a new generation. Inspired by timeless design, British cloth, and enduring quality, Zofia laid the foundation for a brand that now includes multiple shops, a bespoke service, and collaborations with film, theatre and fashion.

Her dedication to local production, sustainable sourcing, and heritage tailoring continues to guide every collection — from the first sketch to the final stitch.

Craftswomen Behind the Scenes

We often talk about craftsmanship as a gender neutral term, but we shouldn't forget the need to highlight craftswomen as well. In fashion, many women are working behind the scenes, creating beautiful pieces for little recognition. Not at Laird.

Our workrooms in Tottenham and Hertfordshire are filled with skilled hands and sharp eyes — many of them women. Whether cutting cloth, threading needles, or shaping felt over wooden blocks, the precision and care they bring to every hat cannot be overstated.

They work hard to master their craft, blend tradition with innovation, and ensure every piece carries the Laird standard of quality.

Women on the Shop Floor

In our shops across London and Cambridge, we have incredibly talented Laird women who guide customers through the process of finding their perfect hat. With a knowledge of fit, fabric and form that goes beyond fashion, they offer a personal experience rooted in confidence and care.

We appreciate the warmth, style, and insight they've given that has helped build a loyal following of customers from around the world.

Celebrating The Women Who Wear Many Hats

At Laird, we celebrate the women who wear many hats — both literally and symbolically. From wide-brimmed felts and sleek trilbies to soft berets and structured caps, our collection is designed for women with presence and purpose.

But it’s not just about headwear. We recognise the many roles women take on every day — as mothers, business owners, creatives, leaders, partners and so much more. These are the hats worn with quiet strength and unshakeable grace.

Whether on set, on stage or simply walking through life on their own terms, our hats are made for women who keep their heads held high, who lead with style and substance, and who make their mark, one step at a time.
