Hat Sizing & Fit

What is the average hat size for men?

The average men’s hat size in the UK is 59 cm, which typically corresponds to a Large (L). However, head size varies, so we always recommend measuring your head for the most accurate fit.

What is the average hat size for women?

The average women’s hat size is 57 cm, usually a Medium (M). For the best fit, measure the circumference of your head just above the ears and across the forehead.

How do I measure my head for a hat?

To measure your hat size:

  1. Use a soft tape measure.
  2. Measure around your head, just above the ears and across the middle of your forehead.
  3. Keep the tape level and snug, but not tight.
  4. Note the measurement in centimetres.

You can then match this measurement to our hat size chart to find your ideal size.

What if my head measurement falls between sizes?

If you are between sizes, we generally recommend sizing up for comfort. You can use hat fillers to reduce the internal circumference by approximately 1–2 cm for a more precise fit.

Alternatively, visit one of our stores for a professional fitting.

How should a hat fit properly?

A properly fitting hat should:

- Sit comfortably above the ears

- Feel secure but not tight

- Leave no deep marks on your forehead

- Stay in place when you move naturally

If your hat feels too loose or too tight, adjustments can often be made depending on the style.

Hat Styles Explained

What is a fedora hat?

A fedora is a soft felt hat with a defined crown crease and a medium-to-wide brim. Traditionally worn as part of formal menswear, the fedora remains a classic British style suitable for both tailored and smart-casual looks.

What is a trilby hat?

A trilby is similar to a fedora but typically features a shorter brim and a slightly taller crown. It is often worn at the back of the head and is considered a sleeker, more modern alternative.

What is a baker boy or newsboy cap?

A baker boy cap (also known as a newsboy cap or paperboy hat) features a round, full crown and a short stiff peak. Popularised in early 20th-century Britain, it remains a timeless casual style.

What is a flat cap?

A flat cap is a rounded cap with a small stiff brim at the front. Traditionally associated with British heritage and countryside style, flat caps are versatile and can be worn both casually and smartly.

What is a Panama hat?

A Panama hat is a lightweight straw hat traditionally woven in Ecuador. Known for its breathable construction and elegant shape, it is ideal for summer occasions and warm climates.

What is a deerstalker hat?

The deerstalker is a traditional British country hat featuring ear flaps and two brims (front and back). It is famously associated with Sherlock Holmes and countryside pursuits.

Styling & Fashion Advice

How do you wear a flat cap?

A flat cap should sit snugly on the head, with the brim facing forward. It can be worn slightly angled for a relaxed look, or straight for a more traditional appearance.

How do you wear a fedora properly?

A fedora should sit level on the head, approximately one to two finger widths above the eyebrows. Avoid pushing it too far back, as this can affect both fit and style.

Are flat caps still in style?

Yes — flat caps remain a staple of British menswear. They are frequently seen in both heritage tailoring and modern street style, making them a versatile wardrobe piece.

What type of hat suits my face shape?

General guidance:

- Round face: Structured styles like fedoras or trilbies

- Long face: Medium-brim hats with balanced proportions

- Square face: Softer shapes such as flat caps

- Oval face: Most styles are suitable

Hat Care & Maintenance

Can a felt hat get wet?

Felt hats are naturally water-resistant, but prolonged exposure to heavy rain should be avoided. If your hat becomes wet, allow it to dry naturally at room temperature — never use direct heat.

How do I clean a felt hat?

To clean a felt hat:

- Use a soft hat brush to remove dust.

- Brush in a counter-clockwise direction.

- For light marks, use a clean damp cloth.

For deeper cleaning, professional hat cleaning is recommended.

Can 100% wool caps get wet?

Our 100% wool flat caps are naturally water-resistant and can handle light rain. However, avoid prolonged exposure and always allow them to dry naturally to maintain their shape and quality.

How should I store my hat?

Store your hat:

- On a flat surface or in a hat box

- Away from direct sunlight

- In a cool, dry environment

Proper storage helps maintain the crown shape and brim structure.

Can hats be stretched or adjusted?

Some felt and leather sweatband hats can be slightly stretched. However, significant size adjustments are not always possible. If unsure, contact us or visit a store for professional advice.
