Known in England as the Bakerboy Cap, this iconic eight-panel design has journeyed from 19th-century baseball fields to 20th-century silver screens—and into the wardrobes of modern-day style connoisseurs.
Its origins trace back to the 1860s, when the Brooklyn Excelsiors baseball team wore a rounded cap with a buttoned crown and short brim, the original shape that would inspire generations of newsboys, bootblacks, and working-class dandies across the Atlantic. By the 20th century, it had become a sartorial staple, immortalised by Robert Redford in The Sting and echoed in today’s love for vintage tailoring.
In England, the style harks back to the Guilds in London, and the bakerboy, a cap of the working class, was made from scraps of cloth, hence the 8-piece design. By the mid-nineteenth century the cap became a symbol of status within the guilds.

Good service, and great product!
Purchased this beautifully made cap at Strand to bring home to my husband in the US. The gentleman running the shop was so nice and helpful. He stretched the cap to 63.5 cm and it fit my husband perfectly. He loves it so much, I know he’s going to want to order additional caps to have in his collection.

The hat is well constructed and fits very well. I love the material and oxblood color. I like the newsboy style, but do not like a lot of extra material on the sides--the cut of this hat is perfect. It's nice and slim, but still gives old school peaky hat vibes. Laird also shipped very quickly, and the item arrived in perfect shape.

Lovely colour variant within the Loden range. I have all the others and held off the oxblood as wasn’t sure it would suit or go with clothing I normally wear. I’m pleasantly surprised that it is pretty versatile and easy to wear.

This is my fifth Brooklyn Newsboy cap and the second made with Loden wool. As always, very comfortable and stylish, especially in the Oxblood color. I had purchased the flat cap in this color and fabric, so now I have a matched pair!

Wanted to leave a 5 star review. In person I got my terrific Loden 'Brooklyn' Newsboy cap on 13 Feb '26. The Lairds cap was a primary quest on my London journey from the US. Beyond pleased that, when I walked out of my hotel--Strand Palace, the Lairds Hatters was directly across! Stylish, comfortable--a treasure.
